Minimizing the Internal Conflict

In my therapy session today, Shelley said I should list all the ways in which I am like my dad. This came with my revelation that I still had my dad in my head in many ways and that in particular, I set goals which I then argue with and procrastinate. I am my dad and my little rebelling boy-self all in one.

I've elicited the help of my wife to map this for me:

  1. Being short & impatient with people
  2. Thinking people should be on my timeline (leaving, etc)
  3. Needing to be right/righteous
  4. TV
  5. anti-social/ nervous
  6. doesn't like to leave house/ travel
  7. doesn't handle details and follow-through on things that he promotes "are very very important"
  8. Needy
  9. Needs approval regularly for the littlelest of things
  10. Sets poor example (breadcrumbs on sink after yelling about needing a clean house; being the "supervisor" versus getting in there and keeping things clean/ cleaning them up)
  11. self righteous - cannot be the butt of jokes
